AI is Getting Smarter… But We Are Getting Less Intelligent? A Research Study Everyone Should Know!

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot have become essential in the workplace, helping us work faster and more efficiently. But have you ever wondered if relying too much on AI might affect our thinking skills?

Recently, researchers from Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University studied how using AI at work impacts critical thinking skills—and they discovered that AI might be making us think less without even realizing it!

Relying Too Much on AI = Thinking Less?

Research suggests that when we delegate tasks to AI—such as writing emails, summarizing articles, or analyzing data—our primary role often becomes just verifying AI’s output, rather than engaging in deep, analytical thinking ourselves.

This behavior can lead to missed opportunities to develop decision-making and problem-solving skills, which are crucial in today’s workplace.

"If we let AI do all the thinking for us, one day we might lose our ability to solve problems independently. And when AI makes mistakes, we might not even know how to handle them." – Key finding from the study.

Study Findings: Is AI Changing the Way We Think?

Researchers surveyed 319 employees who use AI at least once a week at work, categorizing their usage into three main groups:

  • Content Creation – Writing emails or documents.

  • Information Retrieval – Summarizing articles or researching new topics.

  • Decision Assistance – Asking AI to analyze data or help with decision-making.

When asked if AI made them think more critically or less, 36% of respondents said they still used critical thinking skills to reduce AI’s errors. However, those who were overconfident in AI showed a clear decline in critical thinking!

Real-Life Examples: AI Still Makes Mistakes!

Some study participants shared insightful experiences:

  • An employee used AI to write a performance review for a colleague but had to carefully check it to ensure the AI didn’t generate inappropriate statements that could backfire.

  • Another person used AI to draft an email to their boss but had to edit it significantly to align with the company’s hierarchical culture and avoid miscommunication.

  • Many people double-check AI-generated answers using Google, Wikipedia, or YouTube, which sometimes takes more time than finding the answer manually in the first place!

AI Won’t Make Us Less Intelligent—If We Use It Correctly!

While excessive reliance on AI might reduce our thinking skills, it doesn’t mean AI is bad! Here’s how to use AI wisely:

  • Use AI as a tool, not a replacement – Don’t let AI do all the thinking for you. Instead, use it to enhance your efficiency.

  • Always verify information – AI’s answers may sound convincing but aren’t always correct. Double-check before relying on them.

  • Practice critical thinking – Instead of blindly accepting AI’s responses, use it to spark your own ideas, ask open-ended questions, or explore different perspectives.

  • Understand AI’s limitations – AI can still generate false information (hallucinations) and has biases. Recognizing these weaknesses allows for better usage.

AI Is a Powerful Assistant—But It Shouldn’t Replace Our Thinking!

Generative AI is transforming the way we work. However, if used carelessly, it may weaken our problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Instead of letting AI think for us, we should use it as a thought partner—constantly verifying and questioning its outputs. That way, AI becomes a valuable asset rather than a tool that makes us less intelligent!
